Residential Student Judicial Board

The Residential Student Judicial Board is composed of a pool of 60 - 100 residence hall students and adjudicates Class I cases.  The individual hall councils will select 10 - 20 students from its residence hall. Five (5) members of the Residential Student Judicial Board pool constitutes a Class I Hearing Board.

The Residential Student Judicial Boards shall hear cases involving residence hall students for violations occurring within the residence halls. All other cases shall be heard by the Judicial Affairs Office.

The Residential Student Judicial Board shall have the authority to levy all sanctions as described in The Student Code of Conduct, except for suspension from the Residence Hall System and expulsion from Northern Illinois University. The board does not hear cases of any Class II actions.

All students who are appointed by Hall Councils to the Residential Student Judicial Board pools are appointed in the fall and serve for one academic year.  All vacancies shall be filled by the appropriate appointing body to serve the remainder of the respective terms. Residential Student Judicial Board members shall be in good academic standing.

These boards will not preside over cases in the summer months.

To become a student judicial board member the following requirements must be met:

Eligibility:

  • Currently enrolled NIU student (undergraduate, graduate, and/or professional)
  • Minimum grade point average of 2.0. Preferred grade point average of 2.5 or better at the time of appointment
  • Is and remains in good judicial standing
  • Currently lives in the residence halls
    Weekly Time
Commitment:
  • Usually no more than one time a week for weekly board meetings
  • All Board members are required to participate in a one-day training session
  • Board members must also be available to hear misconduct cases when requested unless there are academic conflicts.
