Thank you for your question. Unfortunately, the
answer is no. This is due primarily to our mandate as a service unit
within the Division of Student Affairs, which allows us to see only
currently enrolled students. There is currently no provision for paying
fees as a way of qualifying for counseling following graduation.
However, I do want you to know that there are other counseling services available, both on-campus and in the surrounding community. On-campus, the NIU Family Center, located in Wirtz Hall, sees individuals, couples, and families, including students and non-students. You may contact the Family Center by calling 753-1684. Also on-campus, is the NIU Psychological Services. This office also sees both students and non-students. You can reach this office by calling 753-0591. NIU Psychological Services is located at the corner of Normal Road and Lincoln Highway. A third on-campus possibility is the Counseling Lab, located in Graham Hall, Room 416. Their phone number is 753-9312. Each of the offices just listed is part of a graduate training program. The counselors in these offices are graduate students who are supervised by licensed clinical or counseling faculty. The fee structure for each of these offices varies, and you should consult specifically with each office regarding their fees. In addition to these on-campus resources, one off-campus resource you may want to consider is the Family Service Agency. They are located in DeKalb at 14 Health Services Drive. Their phone number is 758-8636. This is a fee-for-service agency. They work with insurance and also offer a sliding scale fee for those who meet specific income requirements. There are also various private practice counselors, social workers, and psychologists in the DeKalb area. If you are interested in more specifics regarding private practice possibilities, or have any questions regarding referral options, do not hesitate to call our office, the Counseling and Student Development Center, at 753-1206. Tell the receptionist you are interested in learning more about off-campus referrals, and she will have you speak to one of our staff members who can advise you more specifically regarding your individual situation. Good luck in your search! Sincerely, Barb Wired |
