Dear Confused, BW is glad you wrote! Being nervous prior to the onset of a major life transition, such as starting college, is certainly understandable. As you point out, you are close to home, which can not only provide easy access for you to get home, but can also allow your boyfriend and others with whom you are close to visit you here at NIU: This will allow you to engage in activities and interactions with new people here while still being able to look forward to visits from significant others. Some suggestions for dealing with potential shyness or loneliness would include talking to residential life staff, participating in New Student Welcome Days, joining a club or organization related to a chosen major or hobby, and taking advantage of the First Year Connections program offered through the Orientation Office on campus (where opportunities for being mentored through a specific class (UNIV 101) or faculty linkage program exist). Remember that embarking on the college journey is a process, and that there are many people in the residence halls, on campus, and at the counseling center who can also provide support during the adjustment phase and throughout your time at NIU. Good luck and welcome to NIU! You will undoubtedly soon be meeting new people and beginning the process of feeling more "at home." Try not to rush yourself or place unrealistic expectations on your initial experience, while remaining open to all the university offers. BW |
