Dear Resume Writer:

I am glad you asked this of Barb Wired. You are not the only one who has questions like these. Four offices on the second floor of the Campus Life Building (CLB) can be helpful in regards to career development – but in different ways. Therefore, I’d like to take this opportunity to not only answer your question but also to briefly outline the differences between the offices that offer career services.

In regards to your specific issue, the Career Planning and Placement Center offers help with resumes and other job search assistance. Their phone number is 815-753-1641. They also have walk-up resume critiquing available in CLB Room 220 from noon to 4:00 on Monday-Thursday and from 9:00 to noon on Friday. Here is a link to their website. In addition to calling them for help, I would strongly recommend that you go to their website and register with Victor-E-recruiting.

The other offices in the CLB that help with career development include the Counseling & Student Development Center (CSDC), the Cooperative Education and Internship Program (Co-op), and the Career Resource Center (CRC).

CSDC, which is located in CLB 200, offers career counseling to help students with deciding on a major, deciding what career to pursue with a certain major, clarifying career interests and values, and breaking through obstacles to career decision making. Our career services are described in more detail by following this link. To set up an appointment for career counseling for help with these issues, call 815-753-1206.

Co-op, which is located in CLB 240, is the office that helps students find career-related work experiences (co-ops and internships). They have internship job listings on-line, and they can help you create an internship on your own. Access their website through this link. If you have questions, give them a call at 815-753-7138.

The CRC is an excellent place to do all of the work that goes into developing into a very fulfilling career. It has books and videos with career information, information on NIU’s academic programs and potential employers, and computers where you can write your resume and easily access the on-line sources described above. Here is a link to their website. Stop by CLB Room 235 any time from 8:00-4:30 M-F and take advantage of what the CRC has to offer.

If you have additional questions about the functions of these offices and which office is best for you, give CSDC a call, and we’ll get you where you need to go.

Good luck with the job hunting!
