Thank you for your question. Yes, these services are offered at the Counseling and Student Development Center. We have a small group experience for students coping with stress called the Stress Management Workshop. It is scheduled to begin on January 31, 2006. In addition, there is an Overcoming Depression Group that is also beginning soon. Regarding your concerns about organization, we offer Coaching for Academic Success, an individual and group program that teaches students a comprehensive range of academic skills which are crucial for success in college. Finally, since self-esteem is influenced by all of the factors you have just listed, it follows that as you learn to manage stress more effectively, overcome depressed feelings, and become more organized and productive, your self-esteem is likely to increase significantly. Many students have also discovered the benefits of general individual and group counseling as additional avenues for enhancing self-esteem. You can learn more about all of these programs by visiting the CSDC website at www.niu.edu/csdc and looking under “Counseling Services.”

If these services seem to be what you are looking for, the next step is to come in to our office, located in Room 200 of the Campus Life Building, and have an initial meeting with one of our counselors who will help you decide which combination of services is best for you. In addition, you can also learn about other counseling options on campus that might be helpful you. Programs in psychology, counseling, and marriage and family therapy all offer services to students as well. Thank you for helping to raise awareness regarding these services. Many students have similar needs and are searching for help as well. Take care and good luck. We hope to see you soon.

Sincerely,
