Psychological Counseling, Group Therapy, Crisis Intervention, and Psychiatric EvaluationStudents needing assistance with personal concerns can schedule a consultation with a CSDC counselor. Following this appointment, the counselor and student determine the service that best meets the student's needs: group therapy, individual counseling, or referral to an NIU or outside agency.
If individual counseling at CSDC is recommended, the student discusses the goals and length of counseling with her/his assigned counselor. Counseling at CSDC is based on a short-term model. This means that we develop strategies to address student goals and then determine the approximate number of sessions necessary to meet those goals. The number of sessions that students receive ranges from 2-14 with most students being seen 8 times. At times, the requests for counseling outnumber our staff resources. If a consultation occurs during one of these high demand periods, students may be placed on a waiting list.
Students whose personal concerns can best be addressed in a group context are scheduled for an appointment with a group facilitator.

staff member is available to assist with emergencies. Please call and request
to speak with the Daytime Emergency Coverage counselor. After-hours and on the weekends,
an on-call counselor is available who may be accessed by calling the University
Police at 753-1212. Students can call for emergency consultation and crisis
intervention.
