When
Concerned about a Friend: Show You Care
If you believe your
friend to have a problem with substance use, show your concern by talking to
your friend at a time when he or she is not drunk or high. Often talking about
problematic use with another friend present is best. Avoid blaming or shaming your friend. Express your concern by
sharing your own feelings about his or her substance use.
Try to remain calm and
straightforward when explaining your concerns. Prepare
Try to understand that
your friend may respond negatively or with hostility, which may be uncomfortable
to experience. Consult with
faculty, a C.A, staff, or a CSDC counselor to assist you as you face your
friend. Know what help is
available, and help your friend develop a plan for help if he or she is able to
face their problematic use. Practice Self-Care
If he or she is unable or unwilling to get assistance, set some personal limits, such as refusing to make excuses or cover for your friend. Rely on support that is available to you, such as services in the counseling center, so that you are not facing this challenge alone. Return to Drug & Alcohol Assessment & Treatment Page
