Recreation Services - Facility Information

Recreation Services membership includes use of both the Student Recreation Center and the Chick Evans Field House. Reservation and rental questions for these two buildings, recreation sports fields, and the Gabel swimming pool may be directed to Dave Lochbaum, Associate Director, (815) 753-9420 or  dlochbaum@niu.edu.

The Outing Centre

Student Recreation Center – located on the southwest corner of Annie Glidden Road and Lucinda Avenue.

  • Building Layout
  • Hours of Operation
  • 8 multipurpose courts for volleyball, basketball, tennis and badminton
  • Cardio-weight room with state of the art cardio-fitness training equipment including Matrix, Body Masters, and Cybex
  • Free-weight room including floor to ceiling mirrors and plenty of free weights .
  • Power Lifting Room
  • A 3-lane jogging/walking track nearly 1/5 mile long
  • 10 racquetball/handball/wallyball courts, five with viewing backwalls
  • 2 activity rooms for group fitness programming, classes and instructional sessions, martial arts, and large group meetings
  • Men's and women's locker rooms with saunas (accessible to persons with disabilities)
  • Comfortable meeting room that accommodates 40 people, available for reservation by university and outside groups
  • Spacious lounge at the main entrance for enjoyment of Recreation Center users
  • Located in the lobby is the Juice Bar along with beverage and snack vending machines
  • Racquetballs, table tennis balls, shuttlecocks, and daily towel tickets are available from Student Recreation Center Service Counter
  • Recreation Services administrative offices are located within the northwest section of the facility

Chick Evans Field House - located east of the Student Recreation Center, on the southeast corner of Annie Glidden Road and Lucinda Avenue.

  • Hours of Operation 
  • 2 group fitness rooms with mirrors
  • 2 multi-purpose courts (basketball / volleyball)
  • 2 multi-purpose boarded courts (indoor soccer / floor hockey)
  • Issue room (basketballs, volleyballs, soccer balls, hockey sticks)
  • Locker rooms (male & female) for students / members, staff, athletics
  • Cardio room (4 tv cardio-theater, 5 treadmills, 5 recumbent bikes, 2 stair climbers, 9 elliptical trainers, 2 stretch trainers, and a 12-station cable crossover machine)
  • 3-lane walking / jogging track
  • Lounge area with vending machines
  • 2 classrooms

Anderson Hall Pool and Gabel Hall Pool access may be gained by presenting a valid N.I.U. Student OneCard.  All others must purchase a pool pass for a nominal fee from the Student Recreation Center Service Counter.  


The Outing Centre is located at the northwest corner of Student Recreation Center.

  • Contains an extensive inventory of outdoor recreation equipment available for rent.
