*

Equipment Check-Out Procedures

  • Your current N.I.U.  STUDENT  PHOTO ID must be presented at checkout time to receive the student rental rate.  Faculty/Staff will be eligible for the F/S rate once they present their current Faculty/Staff NIU OneCard.  All others must present a current, valid Driver’s License.

  • Only 3 of any type of equipment (i.e., 3 pairs of skate, 3 softballs, etc.) may be rented per I.D.
  • All equipment is available on a first come, first served basis.
  • A security deposit, payable by personal check or credit card, is required from faculty/staff and others at all times in order to check out equipment.  Students are required to provide a security deposit when classes are not in session or when rented equipment is due after the last week of classes.  The security deposit will be refunded when the equipment is returned undamaged, dry, clean, and complete with all parts that were originally rented.

  • It is solely the responsibility of the person checking out equipment or sporting goods to determine whether all items are complete and undamaged.
  • Equipment CANNOT be renewed.  If you wish to keep equipment for a longer period of time, all items must be brought into the Outing Centre and re-rented.
  • All  rental tents must be completely set up before you depart from the O/C.  Allow 1/2 hour for this procedure for each tent.  The is to assure yourself that the tent is in respectable condition for your trip.  We will cover any questions about your set-up at this time.
  • When a tent is returned, the person returning the tent must set it up completely.  Any damage will be assessed at this time.  The tent must be clean, dry and complete.  After the tent is checked out, it must be folded/rolled and packed by the person returning the tent.

Late, Lost and Damaged Equipment Policies

  • The person checking out equipment is responsible for any late fees, the cost of repairing all damaged equipment or the cost of replacing all lost equipment.
  • A late fee will be charged to any person not returning equipment on or before the date it is due.  The late fee for equipment rented on the 1 - 4 day schedule is TWICE the 1 - 4 day charge per rental period (1 - 4 days).  Equipment rented on a daily basis has a late fee of twice the daily rate per rental period.  These fees will continue to accumulate per period.
  • Anyone who loses equipment will be charged THE REPLACEMENT COST for that piece of equipment AND A 14 DAY LATE FEE.
  • The Assistant Director for the Outing Centre will determine the charge for repair to damaged equipment.  The charge can appealed to the Campus Recreation Council.  The damage fee cannot exceed the current retail price for a piece of equipment.
  • For items returned dirty, the fine is $8.00 for equipment valued at less than $100.00 and for items valued at greater than $150.00 the late/soiled fee is $15.00.  The fee is the same for items returned wet.
  • The is $5.00 service fee for anything charged through the Bursar’s Office.
